On November 28, 2024, First Lady Casey DeSantis participated in a Thanksgiving Turkey Trot aimed at raising awareness for pediatric cancer in Florida. The event paid tribute to two-year-old Griffin Anderson from Jacksonville, who is bravely battling Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer primarily affecting young adults and teenagers.
Griffin’s journey began after an accident in April 2024, when he fell from a bunk bed, leading to an initial concern about a possible fracture. However, X-rays uncovered a mass on his humerus, which was later identified as Ewing’s sarcoma. Following multiple rounds of chemotherapy and blood transfusions, doctors concluded that amputation of his arm was necessary to save his life. Remarkably, Griffin has shown incredible resilience, adapting well to his new circumstances, and serving as a source of inspiration to many.
First Lady DeSantis emphasized the ongoing battle against cancer, stating, “We will not stop until it’s defeated.” She highlighted Florida’s commitment to supporting individuals like Griffin and advancing health care research.
In August 2022, the state initiated Florida Cancer Connect, a comprehensive resource designed to provide the latest cancer research, support tools, and survivor testimonials. This initiative enables Floridians to understand cancer research, locate specialists, navigate insurance complexities, access caregiver resources, and hear inspiring stories from fellow survivors.
Furthermore, under Governor DeSantis’s direction, Florida established the Cancer Connect Collaborative, a team of medical professionals focused on enhancing the state’s cancer combat strategies. This collaborative aims to improve data accessibility, share best treatment practices, ensure transparency about cancer prevention, drive innovation, and secure funding for ongoing research.
In 2024, Florida allocated over $232 million towards cancer research, which includes a significant boost to the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund and the Casey DeSantis Cancer Research Program.
This concerted effort from Florida’s leadership and the community reflects a hopeful and proactive approach in the fight against cancer, fostering a supportive environment for those affected by this devastating disease. Together, these initiatives strive to bring about a healthier future, ensuring that every Floridian has access to vital cancer resources and research.
