The City of Fresno is gearing up for the 41st Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, themed “Dreaming Together: Changed by the Past, Molding the Future.” This series of events, organized by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Committee, will take place from January 14 to January 20, 2025, honoring the legacy of Dr. King and promoting community unity and social justice.
The celebration will kick off with an Opening Garlanding Ceremony at Courthouse Park on January 17 at 11:45 AM. This event will include welcome remarks from the Fresno County Board of Supervisors and performances by local student groups, including the Fresno Unified School District Black Student Union and King Elementary School Dancers.
Later that day, a Community Awards Program will be held at Fresno City Hall at 5:00 PM, recognizing outstanding community leaders and educators. Following the awards, a Candlelight Peace Vigil will begin at 6:30 PM at the same location, encouraging reflection and solidarity in the pursuit of peace.
On January 18, the Clovis Police Department will host a Community Breakfast at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District at 9:00 AM, fostering relationships between law enforcement and the community. Tickets for this event are available for $5.
The main celebration events will take place on January 20, starting with a march from St. John’s Cathedral at 9:30 AM, culminating in a Commemoration Program at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, featuring keynote speaker Wendy McCully, Executive Director of the Fresno Unified School District Foundation.
In addition to these events, various activities will lead up to the main celebration, including an art and essay contest reception and a jazz tribute honoring Dr. King’s legacy.
This year’s celebration emphasizes unity and the importance of community engagement in continuing Dr. King’s work toward equality and justice. The series of events not only commemorates Dr. King’s contributions but also inspires future generations to uphold his vision for a better society.
