Former President Jimmy Carter is currently lying in repose at The Carter Center, allowing the public to pay their respects until Tuesday, January 7 at 6 a.m. His passing on December 29 at the age of 100 marks a significant moment in American history, as Carter was the 39th president of the United States.

Carter’s funeral procession began on Saturday, and this marks the start of a series of events leading up to his funeral on January 9, 2024, in Washington, D.C. After the memorial services, Carter will be laid to rest in his hometown of Plains, next to his wife, Rosalynn.

The Carter Center will be open 24 hours for visitors. However, several restrictions are in place: there is no public parking at The Carter Center or King Memorial Station. Visitors are advised to take advantage of MARTA’s shuttle service, which operates every 3 to 5 minutes. Those opting to bike can find bike racks, though it’s recommended to bring a lock as The Carter Center is not responsible for theft or damage.

Additionally, attendees are reminded that bags, umbrellas, and various items including lighters, firearms, and recording devices are prohibited. Visitors can expect to undergo security screenings upon arrival, which may involve a thorough checking process.

As thousands of people are anticipated to pay their respects, the lines may be lengthy. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly, as weather conditions may vary. No photography or video will be permitted inside the center, preserving the solemnity of the occasion.

Looking ahead, events will continue next week as Carter makes his journey to D.C., where he will lie in state before the public can pay their final respects.

In a gesture of honor, President Biden has declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning, ensuring a time for reflection on the contributions and legacy of President Carter.

This series of events serves as a reminder of the significant impact one individual can have on a nation, reflecting the values of service and dedication that Carter represented throughout his life. It is a hopeful time to celebrate his legacy and the peace he encouraged throughout his presidency.
