SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom released a heartfelt statement today following the death of former President Jimmy Carter, reflecting on his significant contributions to human rights and democracy.
“Jennifer and I join the nation and the global community in grieving the loss of President Jimmy Carter, a steadfast advocate for human rights whose lifelong dedication has undeniably enriched our world,” the Governor expressed.
He described former President Carter as a man of exceptional character, whose unwavering beliefs and moral compass served as a guiding light. “He recognized the shared humanity in each of us, fostering connections among people of varying faiths and backgrounds, while consistently addressing domestic needs. Even in the face of significant challenges, his vibrant spirit and dedication never wavered,” Newsom stated.
Governor Newsom noted that for President Carter, public service transcended a mere profession; it was a core aspect of his existence. After completing his presidency, he and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, committed themselves to promoting global peace and health through the initiatives of the Carter Center, positively impacting lives for over forty years through humanitarian efforts.
“President Carter’s honesty, empathy, and moral guidance establish a benchmark for us all to aspire to. His lasting legacy teaches us that we can always discover common ground, even amidst our differences,” he added.
In remembrance of President Carter, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.
