Renowned food critic and one of Hong Kong’s “Four Talents,” Tsai Lan, peacefully passed away on June 25 at the age of 84, surrounded by family and friends at Hong Kong’s Yanghe Hospital.

His assistant, Yang Ao, shared the news via Weibo on Friday, stating, “Our beloved Mr. Tsai Lan has passed away. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no ceremonies to avoid disturbing friends and family; his remains have been successfully cremated. We thank everyone for their care and concern for Mr. Tsai.”

In recent years, Tsai faced health challenges, including a fall in 2021 that resulted in a fractured hip, requiring surgery. Later, in April this year, there were reports of his hospitalization and critical condition; however, his assistant clarified that his condition was not grave and he was recovering. Tsai himself reassured fans on social media with a message of gratitude for their concern, stating, “Thank you for worrying, but I’m not in a critical situation, so there’s no need to be alarmed. Just smile.”

Born in Singapore and hailing from the Chaozhou region of Guangdong, Tsai settled in Hong Kong, publishing over 200 books throughout his career. He was known for his passion for food, hosting various culinary shows, and serving as a major influence in Hong Kong’s food culture. He held notable positions such as the chief consultant for the show “A Bite of China” and was the honorary president of the World Chinese Health Diet Association. Additionally, Tsai contributed to Hong Kong’s film industry, working with prominent production companies like Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest.

Tsai Lan’s legacy in both the culinary and entertainment worlds remains profound. His influential work will continue to inspire future generations in Hong Kong and beyond.
