Honda has announced a recall of 406,290 vehicles due to a manufacturing defect that poses a significant safety risk by potentially allowing wheels to detach. This recall impacts Civic models from the years 2016 to 2021, as outlined in a recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on November 6.
The defect involves accessory aluminum wheels that may not have the appropriate steel bolt seat. As a result, the lug nuts could loosen over time, creating the dangerous possibility of a wheel detaching from the vehicle while in operation.
According to a statement made to dealers, American Honda anticipates that only a small fraction of the affected vehicles will need wheel replacements. However, to ensure the safety of all owners, Honda will provide inspections of the recalled vehicles’ wheels, and necessary replacements of hubs and wheels will be performed at no charge.
Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters beginning December 9. In addition, customers can reach out to Honda’s customer service at 1-888-234-2138 for more information. The recall has been assigned the number MMZ, so customers are encouraged to reference this when seeking assistance.
This proactive measure by Honda underscores the company’s commitment to safety and customer service, ensuring that any potential risks are addressed promptly and effectively.
