As Coldplay prepares to take the stage for two sold-out shows at the Sun Bowl, fans in El Paso are also excited to see a local favorite, Jim Ward, open for the iconic band. Ward, who is renowned as the co-founder of At the Drive-In and frontman of Sparta, will be making his debut at the historic venue this weekend.

Expressing his delight, Ward shared, “The whole thing is like a joyous occasion. Of course, I want to play a couple of songs in my hometown at the Sun Bowl, where my life changed seeing U2 when I was 15.” He emphasized the significance of this moment both personally and professionally.

Ward’s relationship with Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin dates back to the early 2000s when both bands were rising to fame. “I think in 2001, At the Drive-In was coming up. We had our first song on the radio, ‘One Arm Scissor,’ and Coldplay had ‘Yellow.’ We just met at a festival and became good friends ever since,” he recalled, noting their 24-year friendship.

In a spirit of enthusiasm, Ward noted, “This is a good example of what can happen here. I think El Paso is a perfect city and we’re going to kill it.” He highlighted his belief in the love, compassion, and vibrancy of his hometown, as he prepares for what he describes as an unforgettable homecoming performance.

However, this joyous occasion is tinged with a bittersweet note as Ward simultaneously plans to close Eloise, the restaurant and bar he co-owns with his wife Kristine. After over 13 years in business, they have decided not to renew their lease. Ward reflected on the impact of economic challenges and the importance of cherishing the experiences they have had in the community, stating, “We’ve had an incredible run filled with so much joy and positivity. It’s just time to put it on the shelf for a minute.”

This weekend promises to be a celebration not only of music but also of community ties and cherished memories, highlighting the duality of new beginnings and farewells.
