Home Run Derby Shakeup: Olson Steps In for Acuña!

The lineup for the 2025 Home Run Derby has seen a last-minute adjustment as Matt Olson from the Atlanta Braves steps in to replace his teammate Ronald Acuña Jr., who has opted out of participating. Despite this change, Acuña will still take the field as a starting outfielder for the National League in the upcoming All-Star Game. His decision comes amid his comeback season after recovering from surgery for a torn ACL and recent struggles with back tightness.

Olson, known for his significant power, is enjoying another outstanding season, currently boasting a .481 slugging percentage and 17 home runs over 92 games. Notably, he led the majors last season with 54 home runs and ranks highly among hitters this year in average exit velocity and hard-hit rate, putting him in the 97th and 96th percentiles respectively.

The Home Run Derby, which is part of the All-Star festivities at Truist Park, will occur on July 14 at 7 p.m. ET. This year will see several competitive entrants, including Jazz Chisholm Jr. of the New York Yankees, who brings a .251 batting average and 17 home runs this season, and Brent Rooker from the Athletics, hitting .270 with 19 home runs.

Other young talents included are Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays and Oneil Cruz of the Pittsburgh Pirates, both noted for their impressive slugging statistics. Caminero leads all third basemen with 21 home runs and exhibits remarkable exit velocity, while Cruz is recognized for recording the hardest-hit ball in Statcast history.

Minnesota Twins standout Byron Buxton, a Georgia native, is also slated to join the Derby. He has shown remarkable athleticism with 20 home runs and 16 stolen bases in this season. James Wood, a rising star for the Nationals, and Cal Raleigh, the current home run leader with 32 homers for the Mariners, round out the field. Raleigh’s powerful performances not only show his prowess but put him in a position to break historical records for catchers.

This year’s Derby brings a fresh mix of emerging stars and seasoned power hitters, promising an exciting show for baseball fans. With Acuña’s highlighted role despite his withdrawal from the Derby, and Olson leading the charge, anticipation builds for a night full of thrilling home runs.

Overall, the events surrounding the All-Star festivities, including the Home Run Derby, are moments of excitement that celebrate the talents of baseball’s finest as they exhibit their skills on a national stage.
