Private Temalesi Tinai has returned home from her inaugural tour of duty, filled with a renewed sense of belonging following more than a year away. As she arrived on familiar ground, the warmth of her family enveloped her, a source of strength that sustained her throughout her deployment with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
Since enlisting in the military in 2015, Private Tinai has been a dedicated member of the Army’s Territorial Force. This week, alongside her colleagues, she returned safely after making significant contributions to peacekeeping efforts in Iraq. The emotional reunion was particularly moving as she embraced her two children, who had awaited her return during her service. The 33-year-old from Nabouva Village in Wainibuka, Tailevu, held her kids tightly, treasuring every moment of their long-awaited reunion.
Reflecting on her challenging experiences, Private Tinai expressed heartfelt gratitude for her family’s unwavering support during her absence. “I learned a lot during this tour. I thank my family, especially my husband, for holding the fort for us as I went to serve in Iraq,” she stated. The emotional toll of military service was evident in her reflections, particularly the heart-wrenching decision to leave her daughter, who was only 18 months old at the time. At the welcoming ceremony, she faced the reality of reconnecting with her daughter, who seemed indifferent initially—a poignant reminder of the sacrifices military mothers often endure.
Despite these challenges, Private Tinai reaffirmed her dedication to her duty, recognizing the complex balance between motherhood and service. “As a mother, I’m supposed to be here helping raise my children, but when the military calls, we cannot say no because it’s our duty,” she emphasized. She highlighted the essential role of peacekeeping and the unique sense of hope that Fijians, like herself, bring to war-torn nations such as Iraq.
Now safely back home, Private Tinai is thankful for the protection she experienced during her deployment and is eager to reconnect with her daughter, cherishing the moments lost while she was away. “Being able to return and to see my family is a blessing, and I’m grateful for God’s protection every day,” she added.
Private Tinai’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the sacrifices made by military personnel, particularly women who navigate the demands of service while fulfilling their roles as mothers. As she embarks on this new chapter of her life, her story is a reminder of the resilience and strength exemplified by those who serve in the pursuit of peace.
