Michael Alaimo, a dedicated character actor who made his mark in Hollywood over a remarkable six decades, has passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by his family. He passed away peacefully in Burbank, California on May 2, with his daughter, Gabriella Alaimo Thomas, sharing the news with the media. Despite his family’s announcement, the specific cause of death remains undisclosed.
Alaimo’s career included memorable appearances in several films and television shows. He is perhaps best known for his role as the doctor in the 1996 animated classic “Space Jam,” which starred NBA great Michael Jordan. The film, notable for its combination of live-action and animation, also featured a stellar lineup of sports cameos from the likes of Shaquille O’Neal and Larry Bird. His impressive range also encompassed a wide variety of other notable projects, including a role on a February 1985 episode of the beloved sitcom “Cheers,” where he played Vinnie Claussen.
The seasoned actor’s filmography included roles in movies from the late 1960s, such as “Graffiti” and “Come Play with Me,” to appearances on popular television series throughout the 1980s like “ALF,” “The Paper Chase,” and “Mr. Belvedere.” Alaimo had also featured in well-regarded films such as “Mr. Mom,” alongside stars Michael Keaton and Teri Garr, and the comedy “She’s Out of Control.”
