Thousands of travelers faced significant delays at airports on Tuesday, struggling to reach their loved ones for the holidays. The chaos began when American Airlines briefly grounded all its domestic flights due to a technical issue, which was later exacerbated by severe weather conditions.
The most severe disruptions occurred at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, the largest hub for American Airlines and one of the busiest airports in the nation. The travel disruptions commenced early Tuesday morning when a vendor-related technology malfunction affected the systems responsible for releasing flights. Subsequently, a system of storms moving into the Dallas region triggered a flood warning, causing hundreds of additional flight delays even after the technical issues were resolved about an hour later.
By the evening, only 15 percent of American Airlines flights at Dallas Fort Worth were able to depart on time, according to the aviation data company Cirium. Earlier in the day, the airline had also implemented a ground stop for incoming flights, which lasted for more than four hours until around 8:30 p.m.
