On Tuesday, December 24, District Government offices will close at 2 PM in light of the holiday celebrations on Wednesday, December 25, for Christmas Day. While some services will be limited, many District employees will ensure essential operations continue.
Emergency services, including shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness, will remain operational. The following shelters will be open 24/7 throughout the holiday period: the New York Avenue Men’s Shelter, 801 East Men’s Shelter, Adams Place Men’s Shelter, Emery Men’s Shelter, Pat Handy Women’s Shelter, Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter, and Living Life Alternatives LGBTQ+ Shelter. Additional overflow and hypothermia shelters are also accessible for those in need. For accessible transportation, individuals can reach out to the DC Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or call 311.
The Downtown Day Services Center will be available on December 24 from 9 AM to 5 PM and on December 25 from 8 AM to 3 PM for walk-in services. Also, the Zoe’s Doors Youth Drop-In Center will remain open 24/7.
For mental health support or substance use concerns, residents can call 988 for immediate assistance from trained counselors. The DC Stabilization Center and Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program will provide 24/7 emergency services during this period.
Residents should be aware of modifications to services as the DC Department of Public Works will not collect trash, recycling, or food waste on December 25. Collection services will resume on a modified schedule starting December 26. Similarly, all DC Circulator routes and the DC Streetcar will be closed on Christmas Day and will operate normally after the holiday.
Notably, all DC Public Schools, libraries, and many city services will be closed on December 25, with some closing early on December 24.
This holiday season presents an opportunity for community members to come together and support one another. The availability of essential services, particularly for those in vulnerable situations, exemplifies the city’s commitment to keeping residents safe and supported during the holidays.
In summary, while many services will operate with adjusted hours for the Christmas holiday, vital resources remain available for those in need. This ensures that even during the festive season, the community’s vulnerable populations have access to necessary support.
