Hokies Ready to Make Noise in NCAA Softball Tournament Showdown

Virginia Tech softball begins its NCAA Tournament journey in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, after narrowly missing out on hosting a regional. The Hokies (41-11) will kick off their tournament run against Belmont (40-14) on Friday at 3:30 p.m., a matchup streaming on ESPN+. A victory would advance them to face the winner of the No. 15 Alabama vs. Jackson State game on Saturday at noon. A loss would send them to the elimination bracket for a Saturday afternoon game.

Pitcher Emma Lemley expressed confidence heading into the tournament, stating that the team has worked diligently during practice to prepare for tougher competition. The Hokies are keenly aware of the formidable challenge posed by Belmont, particularly their pitcher Maya Johnson, who leads the nation in strikeouts with 355. Belmont plays a small ball style and significantly relies on strategic play rather than power hitting, with its home run leader hitting only six home runs this season. In contrast, Virginia Tech’s Cori McMillan has achieved 30 home runs on her own.

The teams have met previously, resulting in a commanding 13-1 victory for the Hokies earlier this year. Hokies catcher Zoe Yaeger emphasized the importance of focusing solely on Belmont before considering future matchups, urging her team to deliver their best performance.

Alabama also presents a challenging path, as they host their 20th consecutive regional and feature standout freshman Audrey Vandagriff, who holds impressive statistics with a .407 batting average and numerous stolen bases. The Hokies previously competed against Alabama this season, splitting a two-game series that highlighted the competitiveness of both teams.

Virginia Tech’s first baseman Michelle Chatfield has been recovering from a wrist injury and is considered day-to-day before the tournament. Coach Pete D’Amour acknowledged the team’s struggle in the end-of-season stretch but remains optimistic about their chances moving forward, reiterating the importance of focus and hard work as they enter the postseason.

With strong performances and a focused mindset, Virginia Tech softball is poised to make a significant impact in the tournament and continue their season successfully.
