Hoda Kotb’s Emotional Goodbye: What’s Next After Today Show?

Hoda Kotb has announced her departure from the TODAY show, effective early next year, while confirming that she will continue her association with NBC.

During an emotional segment on September 26, Hoda reflected on her 60th birthday celebration in August, which sparked her decision to pursue new opportunities. “I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60 and try something new,” she explained. She recalled standing outside amid a supportive crowd, feeling that it was a peak moment in her career, leading her to conclude that the timing was right for change.

Hoda emphasized the importance of spending more time with her daughters, Haley, 7, and Hope, 5, in her decision to leave. “Being a late-in-life parent, I realize they deserve more of my time,” she said, acknowledging the limited time available with her children. She called the choice to depart one of the toughest decisions she’s ever made.

As she prepares to exit, Hoda assured viewers that she will stay with TODAY until early next year and will remain within the NBC network in a yet-to-be-defined capacity. “It’s kind of a big deal for me,” she admitted through tears. “I’ve been practicing so I wouldn’t cry, but anyway, I did.”

Hoda has been a mainstay at NBC News for almost 30 years, contributing to programs like “Dateline” and co-hosting the fourth hour of TODAY with Kathie Lee Gifford and Jenna Bush Hager. She has co-anchored TODAY with Savannah Guthrie for over five years.

Savannah expressed her deep affection for Hoda, saying, “We love you so much… You have so much guts. You inspire me. I love you.” The sentiment was echoed by other members of the TODAY family, who shared heartfelt messages in support of Hoda’s decision.

Jenna Bush Hager humorously vowed to remain close: “I will be showing up at your house like the stalker you are to Zac Brown. We are your friends forever.” Sheinelle Jones acknowledged the emotional complexity raised by Hoda’s departure while recognizing her impactful role as a mother and wellness advocate.

Veteran weatherman Al Roker also shared his admiration, saying, “I have never known anybody like you. I’ve known you forever, and I love you.” Craig Melvin highlighted Hoda’s authenticity, noting that her genuine nature remains unchanged off-camera.

Hoda took a moment to reflect on her connections with both her colleagues and the loyal fans who gather in Rockefeller Plaza daily, adding that she had also penned a letter to the TODAY staff regarding her decision to step down.
