Hoda Kotb has announced her departure from the TODAY show, set to take place early next year, while confirming her continued association with NBC.
During an emotional segment on September 26, Hoda reflected on her milestone 60th birthday in August, which inspired her to initiate a change in her life. She expressed, “I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60, and to try something new.” She shared a poignant memory of enjoying her birthday celebration, concluding that it was an appropriate moment to move on.
Hoda emphasized that a significant factor in her decision was the desire to devote more time to her two daughters, Haley, 7, and Hope, 5. “I feel like they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie,” she conveyed, recognizing the limited time she has with them. “And so, with all that being said, this is the hardest thing in the world.”
She confirmed that she would remain with TODAY until early next year, after which she will continue her career within the NBC network in an unspecified capacity. Hoda expressed the emotional weight of her decision, noting, “It’s kind of a big deal for me.”
Having been a part of NBC News for nearly thirty years, Hoda has played various roles, including anchor on Dateline and co-hosting the fourth hour of TODAY alongside Kathie Lee Gifford and later with Jenna Bush Hager. For over five years, she has co-anchored the TODAY show with Savannah Guthrie.
Savannah expressed her love and admiration for Hoda during the announcement, saying, “We don’t want to imagine this place without you.” She praised Hoda’s courage in choosing to leave the show at such a high point in her career, encouraging her to pursue her dreams.
The emotional atmosphere continued as fellow colleagues conveyed their heartfelt messages. Jenna Bush Hager humorously promised to stay close, while Sheinelle Jones acknowledged Hoda’s impact as a mother and her commitment to wellness. Al Roker, a longtime friend, shared his deep admiration, stating, “I’ve never known anybody like you.”
Craig Melvin also honored Hoda for her authenticity, remarking on the genuine kindness she shows off-camera. Hoda took a moment to reflect on her connections with colleagues, staff, and the devoted fans who brighten her days at Rockefeller Plaza. She also wrote a letter to the TODAY staff detailing her decision to step down.
