Hoda Kotb has announced her departure from the TODAY show early next year, although she will continue to be part of the NBC family.
During an emotional segment on TODAY, aired on September 26, Hoda shared that her 60th birthday celebration in August led her to consider making a significant change in her life. She reflected on her birthday experience, stating, “I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60, and to try something new.” She described feeling on top of the world during her celebration and recognized that it was an ideal time to move on.
Hoda emphasized that her decision was also influenced by her desire to spend more quality time with her daughters, Haley, 7, and Hope, 5. “I had my kiddos late in life, and they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie,” she mentioned, acknowledging the limited time available for parenting.
She confirmed that she would remain on TODAY until early next year and plans to continue in a different, yet unspecified role at NBC. “It’s kind of a big deal for me,” she said tearfully.
Having been part of NBC News for nearly thirty years, Hoda has a rich history with the network, including her previous roles on “Dateline” and as co-host of the fourth hour of TODAY alongside Kathie Lee Gifford and later Jenna Bush Hager. She has co-anchored the main TODAY show with Savannah Guthrie for over five years.
Savannah expressed her love for Hoda during the announcement, saying, “When you look around and see these tears, they’re love. You are so loved.” She praised Hoda for her courage in stepping away from a successful role at the height of her career to pursue greater dreams.
The emotional goodbye continued with heartfelt tributes from her colleagues. Jenna Bush Hager made a light-hearted pledge to stay connected, while Sheinelle Jones noted Hoda’s impact as a dynamic mother and role model for wellness. Al Roker, a long-time friend, praised Hoda for her unique and loving nature, and Craig Melvin highlighted her genuine character both on and off screen.
Hoda also expressed her gratitude for her relationships with camera crew, staff, and the TODAY fans who visit Rockefeller Plaza. She shared a letter with the TODAY staff regarding her decision to step down, emphasizing the importance of her experiences over the years.
