Tobias Jelinek, known for his role as Jay, one of the bullies in the beloved classic “Hocus Pocus,” has expressed his enthusiasm for potentially reprising his character in the upcoming “Hocus Pocus 3.” Although he did not return for the sequel, which debuted in 2022, Jelinek is keen to rejoin the fun in another installment of the series, stating in an exclusive interview that he hasn’t yet been approached for the new film but is curious about its direction.
“I have not been asked to be part of the third,” Jelinek told Entertainment Weekly, reflecting on his excitement about where the story might go after the previous film. He shared a few conditions for his return, emphasizing the importance of ideal circumstances.
Jelinek remarked, “If it was done right, I know for a fact Larry [Bagby] would make sure we both did it.” He hopes to collaborate with Omri Katz, who portrayed Max, and Vinessa Shaw, along with Jason Marsden, the voice of the beloved cat Binx. The camaraderie that has developed among the original cast members is evident, as Jelinek expressed how thrilled he would be to work alongside them again.
He also discussed his surprise at not having seen earlier drafts of “Hocus Pocus 2,” which included potential scenes featuring Jay and Ice. Jelinek joked about a particular cut scene where their characters would have been seen humorously locked in cages and singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” Jelinek’s enthusiasm reflects the fond memories shared among the cast and a longing to revisit their iconic roles.
Writer Jen D’Angelo, who is also penning “Hocus Pocus 3,” revealed in a 2023 interview that there was an initial version of the sequel that included Jay and Ice, highlighting her emotional connection to the characters despite their bully status. However, between the Sanderson Sisters’ antics and a new generation of characters, those scenes ultimately did not make the final cut.
Returning cast members from the original film have shown interest in reuniting if called upon by Disney, with both Katz and Shaw openly expressing their eagerness to reprise their roles should the opportunity arise. Shaw reflected on the experience, noting the project’s nostalgic value and the joy of reminiscing about their time on set.
As the anticipation for “Hocus Pocus 3” builds, fans are hopeful for a continuation of the magic and humor that made the original film a Halloween favorite. With ongoing discussions about the film’s development, including potential plots involving new characters and the mysterious Black Flame Candle that could bring the Sanderson Sisters back, the future looks promising for this much-loved franchise.
