The United States men’s national soccer team experienced its first home loss to Canada in 67 years during a friendly match held in Kansas City, Kansas. This loss underscores the team’s ongoing challenges following their early exit from the recent Copa América tournament.
In their first match since parting ways with head coach Gregg Berhalter after the group stage of Copa América, the U.S. was unable to secure a win against their northern neighbors. Canada’s 2-1 victory marked only their second ever win over the U.S. men’s national team on American soil, with the last occurrence dating back to 1957.
As the team awaits the anticipated announcement of Mauricio Pochettino as Berhalter’s successor, the U.S. was led by interim coach Mikey Varas. Meanwhile, Canada showcased its growth under Jesse Marsch, a former assistant coach for the U.S. and a previous candidate for the head coach position.
Canada was particularly impressive in the first half, taking control of the game early. Jacob Shaffelburg netted the opening goal in the 17th minute, putting Canada ahead. They could have extended their lead before halftime against a lackluster American side.
A second goal emerged for Canada when forward Jonathan David struck just before the 60-minute mark. Although the U.S. showed some improvement after the break, with Luca de la Torre scoring his first international goal in the 66th minute, it was insufficient to prevent a third consecutive defeat for the USMNT.
Jacob Shaffelburg’s goal marked a significant achievement, as it was the first time Canada has scored against the U.S. on their home turf since 1985. The U.S. team, having enjoyed a 23-game unbeaten streak against Canada at home, struggled to generate offensive opportunities, being outshot 11-1 in the first half.
Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made his second international start, replacing Matt Turner, who has not played a club match since early April. Defender Tim Ream, following his transfer from Fulham to Charlotte, also started in the match.
The U.S. will look to bounce back when they face New Zealand in Cincinnati on Tuesday.
