On Sunday, Marine veteran Patrick Dailey will begin the groundbreaking for a replica of the historic Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the Marine Corps. This event marks a significant step towards Dailey’s vision of creating a space where Marines can gather and honor their history, especially in time for the Marine Corps’ 250th birthday in 2025. However, to make this dream a reality, Dailey’s nonprofit organization, the Tun Tavern Legacy Foundation, must raise $8 million within the upcoming months.
Founded by Captain Samuel Nicholas on November 10, 1775, Tun Tavern is not only recognized for its significance in Marine Corps history but also as a site where foundational discussions about the U.S. Navy took place. The future site of the Tun Tavern replica, located at 19 South 2nd Street in Philadelphia’s Old City, is only 250 yards from where the original tavern once stood.
Dailey’s journey to establish a commemorative tavern stems from his own experiences over the years, including his time spent at Cookie’s Tavern in Philadelphia, where thousands of Marines convened to celebrate their birthday. This inspired him to create a dedicated venue where Marines, both past and present, could come together.
Beyond being just a gathering place, the new Tun Tavern will also serve as a charitable hub, with proceeds benefiting Marine-related organizations. After acquiring the land and securing the necessary permits, the foundation is now focused on fundraising, having raised approximately $6.5 million towards a total target of $21 million. A recent $1 million challenge grant from an anonymous donor also adds momentum to their efforts.
The original Tun Tavern, which first opened as a brewery in 1686, has deep historical roots as a social and political center in colonial Philadelphia. It holds a unique place in both Marine Corps heritage and local history, having hosted various significant meetings over the years.
With support from various quarters, including prominent figures in Marine circles, Dailey hopes that the establishment of “The Tun” will provide a rightful gathering spot for Marines, fostering camaraderie and honoring their legacy. This ambitious project seeks not only to preserve history but also to create a vibrant community space that can uphold the Marine Corps tradition for generations to come.
It’s a hopeful venture that reflects the resilience and dedication of those who served, reminding us that even in challenging times, the spirit of community and connection remains strong.
Overall, this project illustrates the power of passion and perseverance in preserving history, while promoting charitable endeavors that benefit veterans and the broader community.
