Historic Struggles: Bo Nix’s Rocky Start and Dramatic Comeback

The Denver Broncos faced off against the New York Jets in Week 4, looking to carry the momentum from their recent 26-7 victory over the Buccaneers. However, the game began with a historically poor performance.

Bo Nix, the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, managed to secure his first NFL win last weekend but struggled significantly in the first half against the Jets. He became the first quarterback since 2000 to complete multiple passes in a half while recording negative passing yards. Nix threw seven completions out of 15 attempts for a total of -7 passing yards.

The last quarterback before Nix to post such a low figure was Ryan Leaf in September 1998, who completed 4 of 15 passes for just 4 yards—the lowest in NFL history for a quarterback with at least 15 attempts.

Nix’s first-half numbers were a stark contrast to his Week 3 performance, where he completed 25 of 36 passes for 216 yards.

Bo Nix’s first-half statistics against the Jets included:

– 7 completions on 15 attempts
– -7 passing yards
– 0 touchdowns

Despite the rocky start, Nix rebounded in the second half, throwing his first NFL touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton late in the third quarter. The Broncos narrowly edged out the Jets, winning 10-9 and lifting their season record to 2-2.

Nix concluded the game with 12 completions on 25 attempts, gaining 60 yards and securing one touchdown.

Looking ahead, the Broncos will host the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5.

In terms of quarterback depth, the Broncos do not have a particularly extensive roster behind Nix, with veteran Jarrett Stidham and former Jets draft pick Zach Wilson as the next options.
