He reflected on the journey that led him to this point, stating, “Never, ever in my wildest dreams, did I think I could get to that point.”

Llamas succeeds Lester Holt, who announced his plans to step down earlier this year. Holt will continue to contribute to NBC, maintaining a prominent role at “Dateline.” Alongside his responsibilities at “Nightly News,” Llamas will also anchor “Top Story,” a daily newscast streamed on NBC News NOW, further showcasing his dedication to the industry.
Having begun his career as an intern at a Telemundo station, Llamas has navigated various roles in journalism, building a reputation through his work at NBC and ABC. He has significant experience covering major news events and has conducted interviews with notable figures, including former President Donald Trump and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Llamas attributes much of his success to his immigrant parents who came to the United States with nothing. Celebrating the American dream, he stated, “What it tells me is that the American dream is still alive.
