Historic Queensland State Cup Debut for Fiji’s Raiwaqa Flyers

The Raiwaqa Flyers touch rugby team recently had an unforgettable experience at the Queensland State Cup competition held in Brisbane, Australia. This event marked a significant milestone as it was the first time a Fijian club had received an invitation to participate in this prestigious tournament, which attracted over 40 teams from across Australia.

Comprising players aged between 16 and 20 years, the Flyers not only competed but also engaged deeply with the rugby community during their time in Queensland. Jalesi Young, president of Touch Federation Fiji, highlighted the invaluable learning opportunity that the Queensland State Cup offered the young players. “The QLD State Cup was a memorable and exceptional competition of learning for our boys,” Young stated. He noted that the experience fostered new friendships and provided essential life lessons, which play a crucial role in developing the young athletes both on and off the field.

The Touch Federation Fiji is committed to positively influencing the lives of youth through touch rugby. By implementing a holistic development program, the organization aims to empower these young individuals and create pathways for personal growth in various aspects of life.

Throughout the competition, the Raiwaqa Flyers showcased their talents in a total of seven matches, achieving three wins and facing four losses. Despite their youth, the team’s performance was commendable, particularly within the challenging Open side division. From the tournament, they learned vital lessons about the importance of discipline and mastering the basic skills of the game.

The team expressed their gratitude to the QLD Touch Football and QUNCC committee for the invitation, as well as to WYAM Gold Coast, the Ofa Tukuna Family for their warm hospitality, and the supportive Fijian community in Gold Coast and Brisbane. This experience not only elevated their game but also left lasting memories that the players will carry with them as they continue their rugby journey.
