The U.S. Army is gearing up for an extravagant celebration to mark its 250th anniversary on June 14, coinciding with Flag Day and former President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. The festivities are estimated to cost between $25 million and $45 million, according to Heather J. Hagan from U.S. Army Public Affairs.
This milestone event will feature a grand parade that stretches approximately 0.89 miles along the National Mall, starting at 23rd Street and concluding at 15th Street. An analysis reveals that the cost per 0.1 mile of the parade could range from $2.7 million to $5 million. The parade is set to include 150 military vehicles, 6,600 soldiers, and a flyover of 50 aircraft, creating a spectacular showcase of the Army’s strength.
Many of the military vehicles, particularly the heaviest tanks like the M1A2 Abrams, will originate from Fort Cavazos in Texas. Given the potential impact of these heavy vehicles on city infrastructure, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has raised concerns about possible road damage. In response, the Army has committed to funding any necessary repairs and will implement precautionary measures, including the use of one-inch-thick steel plates at strategic locations where vehicles will be maneuvering.
Additionally, Reagan National Airport will experience closures for up to four hours on the day of the parade to facilitate flight operations such as flyovers, parachute jumps, and fireworks. Specific details about the timing of these closures are still being finalized.
This event is reminiscent of past military parades, including a significant one held in 1991 after the Gulf War, and reflects the Army’s ceremonial traditions. Although there was an earlier proposal by President Trump for a large-scale parade in 2018, that plan was ultimately scrapped due to budgetary concerns.
Overall, this anniversary parade promises to be a historic event, showcasing the Army’s pride and achievements over the past 250 years while contributing to the rich tapestry of American tradition and celebration. It offers an opportunity for the public to engage with and support the military community, fostering national pride and patriotism.
