Rashida Jones has announced her decision to step down as president of MSNBC after nearly four years at the helm, making history as the first Black woman to lead a major television news network. Her departure comes just days before the inauguration of President-elect Donald J. Trump, which coincides with changes in the corporate ownership of the cable news channel.

In a memo shared with staff, Jones expressed her pride in her time at MSNBC, noting the numerous successes achieved during her tenure. She plans to remain in an advisory position until March. Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group, praised her leadership during a challenging news cycle, acknowledging the record viewership and innovations she has driven in digital content and programming.

Under Jones’ leadership, MSNBC has welcomed new figures, including former Biden administration press secretary Jen Psaki, and made significant strides in its digital presence. However, the network has faced a decline in viewership since Trump’s election in November, with prime-time ratings reportedly down 58%. Despite this, there is optimism that viewership may rebound with the upcoming return of Rachel Maddow hosting her show five nights a week.

Rebecca Kutler, who previously served as senior vice president at CNN, has been named interim president. Lazarus commended Kutler’s extensive experience and her potential to foster growth within the network.

Jones highlighted that her decision to leave was a reflective one made over the holidays, celebrating the collaborative efforts of her team in achieving remarkable milestones.

In summary, while the leadership transition at MSNBC marks a significant change for the network, it also holds potential for new growth and renewal as it adapts to the evolving media landscape. By maintaining an emphasis on digital content and welcoming notable on-air talent, the network aims to reengage its audience effectively.
