Historic First for Taiwanese-American Basketball: Kaitlyn Chen’s WNBA Journey

Kaitlyn Chen has etched her name into history as the first Taiwanese-American basketball player drafted by the WNBA. This landmark achievement unfolded during her debut with the Golden State Valkyries in their inaugural pre-season game held in San Francisco. Fans warmly welcomed her performance, applauding as she scored two points and secured three rebounds in just eight minutes of play.

Despite being waived at the season’s onset, she has recently been re-signed to the Valkyries as they seek to strengthen their roster amid several player departures for the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 tournament. Chen previously played alongside Paige Bueckers at the UConn Huskies, where she garnered praise from her former coach, Geno Auriemma. He noted her competitiveness and shooting skills, proclaiming, “Kaitlyn Chen is the kind of player that every really, really good team has.”

In addition to her historic WNBA milestone, Chen made her mark in NCAA history as the first Taiwanese-American athlete to clinch a women’s college basketball title. In April, she played a vital role in UConn’s championship victory, contributing significantly with two points, one rebound, and four assists in the final match against the Colorado Buffaloes.

The 23-year-old California native, born to Taiwanese immigrant parents, has attributed her success to their unwavering support. They have traveled extensively to cheer on Chen throughout her career, emphasizing the importance of family in her journey. She expressed her gratitude, stating, “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them and their support.”

Kaitlyn Chen’s journey in basketball, from Princeton University to the bright lights of the WNBA, provides a hopeful narrative for aspiring players everywhere. She has been compared to notable athletes like Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, and has even garnered monikers reminiscent of basketball star Jeremy Lin. As she continues her career, many are eager to see how Chen will inspire the next generation of players.
