All preparations are complete for the historic day/night Test match set to take place at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, starting July 12. Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed that the upgraded lighting system is fully operational and meets ICC standards, allowing for the excitement of this unique format. Both teams have conducted successful and enthusiastic practice sessions under these conditions this week, leaving players and coaching staff eager to take the field.
West Indies Head Coach Daren Sammy highlighted the positive experience under the new lights, stating that players had no issues during their training sessions and expressed a genuine excitement for the upcoming match. This event will mark the first day/night Test in Jamaica and just the second in the Caribbean, following the 2018 encounter between West Indies and Sri Lanka.
The installation of the upgraded lighting was key to this milestone, and Dr. Donovan Bennett, President of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), commended the collaborative efforts from various supporters in making this possible. Notably, significant contributions came from the Government of Jamaica, Courts for refurbishing the players’ facilities, the Government of India for new scoreboards, and Sandals for assisting with the scoreboard’s construction.
As the excitement builds, Coach Sammy emphasizes the team’s determination to deliver an outstanding performance to thrill the fans during this historic five-day match. Dr. Bennett also encouraged the public to attend the match, highlighting that children under 16 can enter the venue for free, making it an ideal family outing. The hope is for a large turnout to celebrate this pivotal moment in Jamaican cricket.
This event not only symbolizes progress in sports infrastructure for Jamaica but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the joy and unity that cricket can bring to communities.
