Cable Reordering Project advances along Avenida João Pessoa and the Centro Histórico, with multi-stage removal of overhead cables
About 6.8 kilometers of damaged or inactive cables have been removed from 164 poles on Avenida João Pessoa, between Dr. Cochrane and São Bento. The work, weighing roughly 820 kilograms, was completed in the first phase of the Cabling Reordering Project, a joint effort by CPFL, the Secretaria de Infraestrutura e Serviços Públicos (Seinfra), and participating telecom companies, conducted from July 1 to August 5.
Second stage expands the cleanup to 220 poles across three additional streets on the VLT corridor in the Centro Histórico, where 2.3 kilometers of networks are installed. This phase was activated on Tuesday the 12th, with a task force operating on Rua da Constituição between Amador Bueno and Bittencourt. Seven companies are working on 32 poles in this stretch, and they have until August 18 to regularize the situation. After the deadline, CPFL technicians will remove any remaining irregular wiring.
Second stage schedule (highlights)
– July 19: from Bittencourt to Marechal Pêgo Júnior, 35 poles
– July 26: to Júlio de Mesquita, 28 poles
– September 2: to Joaquim Nabuco, 35 poles
– September 9: to Xavier Pinheiro (Constitution stretch), 25 poles
– September 16: Luiz de Camões between Carvalho de Mendonça and Augusto Coelho e Souza, 34 poles
– September 23: Conselheiro Nébias, from Augusto Souza to Francisco Glicério
Third stage
The third stage begins on September 30 and involves another 165 poles, with 2.4 kilometers of aerial wiring. The task force starts at Campos Melo, between Afonso Pena and Luís Gama (24 poles), then continues on October 7 to Xavier Pinheiro (35), October 14 to Luíza Macuco (35), and October 21 to Campos Sales (24). Also in this stage, the team moves on October 28 to Rua Dr. Cochrane, between Campos Sales and São Francisco (30 poles), and concludes on November 4 with the segment from São Francisco to João Pessoa (17 poles).
Sustainability alignment and value
The initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; Reduced Inequalities; and Sustainable Cities and Communities. The program aims to improve safety, reduce outages, and create a cleaner, more reliable urban utility and telecommunications network in a busy historic area and along the VLT corridor.
What this means for residents and visitors
– Safer streets and fewer hazards from exposed or tangled cables.
– Improved aesthetics and potentially fewer service interruptions for utilities and telecoms.
– A staged approach minimizes disruption by concentrating work in defined blocks with clear deadlines.
– Temporary traffic adjustments and lane restrictions may occur in the work areas during each stage.
Summary
The CPFL-led cabling reordering project is progressing in a structured, multi-stage plan to clean up overhead cables along the VLT Centro Histórico corridor and Avenida João Pessoa. The first stage removed nearly 7 kilometers of problematic wiring, and the subsequent stages are scheduled through early November, with multiple companies involved to regularize installations and improve infrastructure, safety, and service for the public.
