LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. — After years of dedicated community advocacy, the historic Pinecrest and I.A. Banks cemeteries in Lake Worth Beach have received much-needed protections through the installation of new fencing.
The city recently completed this project to enhance the security of these significant burial sites, which had previously faced issues of vandalism and neglect. This protective effort has been a decade-long goal for residents and advocates.
The new black fencing, which came at a cost of approximately $548,000, reflects the community’s unwavering commitment to preserving these heritage sites. City crews utilized funding sourced from the local penny sales tax, designated specifically for infrastructure improvements. The financial breakdown includes $438,832.55 allocated for Pinecrest Cemetery and $109,445.44 for I.A. Banks Cemetery, ensuring future maintenance needs can be met through revenue from plot purchases.
Vice Mayor Sarah Melega praised the initiative, calling it essential as these cemeteries serve as final resting places deserving of respect. She noted the community’s persistent efforts, particularly highlighting the human chain protest from last year, as a crucial factor in galvanizing the city’s response to address long-standing concerns over the neglect of the sites.
Elaine White, a local resident connected to the I.A. Banks cemetery, expressed her appreciation, stating, “It looks so upgraded here; it gives them the respect they deserve.” Fellow advocate Retha Lowe echoed this sentiment, expressing joy over the completed project while emphasizing its significance to the local Black community.
The community’s enthusiasm for the new fencing also reflects a broader commitment to honor their ancestors and secure the historical narrative tied to these cemeteries. Debra Robert, one of the leading advocates, conducted significant research on stewardship practices for Black cemeteries and collaborated with experts to further the recognition and preservation of these sites.
As Lake Worth Beach celebrates this milestone, it not only enhances the safety of these cherished locations but also strengthens the community’s bond with its history and heritage. The new fencing stands as a testament to the importance of preserving crucial cultural landmarks, ensuring future generations can honor and remember their past.
