Researchers from Durham University in the UK and the University of Al-Qadisiyah in Iraq have announced that they have located the site of the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah, fought in 636 or 637 AD. This battle was a key victory for Arab Muslims, helping to facilitate their expansion beyond the Arabian Peninsula.
The team’s groundbreaking work began with a project aimed at mapping archaeological sites across the Middle East, particularly focusing on the Darb Zubaydah pilgrimage route from Kufa in Iraq to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Utilizing satellite images from the 1970s alongside historical texts, the researchers were able to make connections that led them to the battle site. William Deadman, a remote sensing expert at Durham University, expressed his excitement upon discovering a fort and double wall structure that matched descriptions from historical accounts.
The confirmed site is located approximately 30 kilometers south of Kufa, in the Najaf Governorate, and has been verified through further on-the-ground research.
