The Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa has shown a strong commitment to the local community and environment by taking on the long-term maintenance of the Nadi Cemetery, located on Enamanu Road. This initiative is part of Hilton’s global “Travel with Purpose” strategy, which emphasizes sustainability and community involvement.
In celebration of World Clean Up Day on September 19, 24 employees from the resort volunteered for two hours to clear the cemetery of rubbish, mow and trim the overgrown vegetation, manage weeds, and apply insecticide. This collective effort resulted in 15 bags of waste being removed, helping to restore the cemetery to a place of dignity and respect.
This clean-up event marks the beginning of a partnership between Hilton Fiji and the Nadi Town Council, with Hilton Fiji committing to consistently maintaining the cemetery. The project is spearheaded by the resort’s Blue Energy Committee, which leads various sustainability and community-focused programs across the islands.
Carey Osborne, Cluster General Manager of Hilton Fiji, highlighted that this initiative is more than just a one-time event. “It’s about ensuring that Fiji remains clean and beautiful. By adopting the Nadi Cemetery, we’re safeguarding a place of cultural and historical importance for the community, while demonstrating our long-term commitment to sustainability,” Osborne stated.
The broader impact of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose program is reflected in its continuous advocacy for responsible tourism worldwide, focusing on sustainability, cultural preservation, and positive community contributions. This initiative by Hilton Fiji aligns with similar environmental stewardship activities in the region, such as those undertaken by the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa and the Radisson Blu Resort, both of which have actively engaged in beach and foreshore clean-ups.
Overall, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa’s ongoing dedication to community service and environmental care not only benefits the local community but also sets a standard for corporate responsibility and sustainable practices in the tourism industry. These efforts illustrate a hopeful path forward, where hotels and resorts actively contribute to preserving the cultural and natural heritage of the areas they operate in, benefiting both current residents and future generations.
