A high wind watch has been issued for significant portions of Western North Carolina and parts of Upstate South Carolina, with meteorologists predicting potentially damaging winds beginning Friday evening and continuing through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service based in Greenville-Spartanburg, northwest winds are expected to range from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts possibly reaching as high as 65 mph, particularly in mountainous areas. This warning encompasses a wide region including counties such as Buncombe, Henderson, Transylvania, Mitchell, Yancey, Avery, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk, and Caldwell, along with adjacent mountain zones of South Carolina.

The anticipated strong winds pose a risk of downed trees and power lines, which could lead to both scattered and widespread power outages. Travel conditions may also become treacherous, especially for high-profile vehicles like trucks and buses.

In addition to the wind concerns, forecasters have noted that these conditions may result in dangerously cold wind chills early Saturday morning, especially across the mountainous terrains. There is also the possibility of blowing snow along the Tennessee border.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for any potential power disruptions by securing or bringing indoors loose outdoor items prior to the windy conditions. Officials recommend staying informed through NOAA Weather Radio or other credible weather channels for updates as the weather system approaches, helping to ensure safety and readiness.
