In previous seasons of college football, scenarios such as the playoff system being limited to four teams created high-stakes matchups, where games like the upcoming clash between No. 2 Georgia and fourth-ranked Alabama would have served as a significant elimination contest. However, with the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams this year, teams aspiring for the national title now have more leeway.
Despite this change, the importance of Saturday’s matchup remains high, as both undefeated Southeastern Conference teams meet at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
Alabama (3-0) enters as a home underdog for the first time since 2007, according to ESPN. Traditionally a powerhouse in the SEC under Nick Saban, Alabama is now in the hands of first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer, who will be looking to assert that the team remains a viable championship contender alongside Georgia.
The Bulldogs (3-0), who have secured two national titles under coach Kirby Smart—also a former Saban assistant—have demonstrated their offensive power by outscoring their first two opponents this season 81-6, despite a narrow victory against Kentucky last week, winning 13-12 and dropping a spot in the rankings as a result.
Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, in his second year as a starter, has not thrown any interceptions and has successfully led his team to score on every trip inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. However, the Bulldogs struggle with certain aspects of their game, ranking 74th in third-down conversions, 81st in third-down defense, and dealing with numerous penalties.
Alabama faces its own set of challenges, specifically in minimizing penalties and fumbles. Nevertheless, with one of the nation’s top passing defenses, ranked fifth, it could have the tools necessary to contain Beck, particularly with standout player Keon Sabb, who has recorded three interceptions in as many games.
Since 2008, Alabama has triumphed in eight of its last nine encounters with Georgia.
