Counterstroke Fiji President Elizabeth Fong has underscored the direct link between diet and health, particularly emphasizing the role of food choices in the development of non-communicable diseases. Fong pointed out that contemporary diets are often overloaded with hidden sugars, which can escalate health risks across populations.
She urges consumers to read food labels diligently, especially on imported items that may initially appear healthy. Fong warns that many products contain concealed ingredients that could lead to severe health issues. “It says fresh and no additives. But when I actually look at it and the composition of those food items, you see why our advocacy is based on eating local,” she expressed.
Fong advocates for a shift towards fresh, locally sourced produce, encouraging individuals to shop at markets and select affordable local options as the most effective approach to safeguarding their health.
Margaret Reid Rounds, Chair of the NGO Coalition, added that awareness of dietary habits and more informed food choices can significantly reduce the risk of serious health concerns. “The coalition is really about facilitating information sharing that can then have a ripple effect throughout the community,” she stated.
Overall, the organization emphasizes that taking charge of one’s food choices is essential in tackling the growing prevalence of significant health issues in the country. By promoting local produce and raising awareness about food intake, there is a hopeful pathway to improved public health outcomes.
