Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has revealed a concerning rise in cases of young adults leaving home due to domestic violence. In her remarks, she highlighted the ministry’s efforts to locate relatives of these individuals and safely reunite them whenever possible.
In situations where returning home is unsafe, the ministry provides alternative support by placing young adults in shelters and connecting them with educational and employment opportunities. “The longer these children stay on the streets, the higher their risk of exposure to drug use, HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and abuse,” Ms. Kiran noted, emphasizing the critical need for timely intervention.
Kiran stressed that everyone deserves to live with dignity, mentioning the importance of proper shelter and essentials for life, a commitment the ministry is actively pursuing. Building trust through compassion and coordinated care is a key element of the ministry’s approach. She encouraged individuals who feed homeless individuals to also link them with wraparound services, including shelters, job placements, and educational opportunities.
While acknowledging the good intentions behind feeding those on the streets, Kiran cautioned that isolated efforts can inadvertently encourage prolonged street living, exposing individuals to ongoing risks. She expressed gratitude for the support extended by various individuals and organizations, framing the community’s collective responsibility as crucial in helping fellow citizens lead better lives.
Kiran further emphasized that addressing social challenges faced by street populations requires a comprehensive approach, systematically involving communities, faith-based organizations, and the general public in collaborative efforts.
