Hibiscus Festival in Suva Signals Safer, Cleaner City Future

The 2025 Hibiscus Festival has painted Suva in vibrant hues, infusing the city with energy and celebration. While the festivities bring joy and color, significant efforts have been made to ensure safety and cleanliness, enhancing the overall experience.

This year sees ten contestants vying for the title of Queen, with contestants coming from diverse backgrounds, representing various organizations. Among them, Miss National Fire Authority Ryelle Aisea stands out, having won $1000 in prize money through her performances.

Ensuring a secure environment, over 60 high-tech security cameras have been installed permanently across strategic locations in Suva, from bus stands to areas known for higher crime rates. This initiative, overseen by Suva City Council acting CEO and festival committee chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa, aims to deter criminal activity long-term, providing peace of mind during and beyond the festival.

The festival’s commitment to cleanliness is evident through initiatives like “Operation Bins,” ensuring the city remains pristine. The council has also engaged schools and women’s groups to educate on and transform waste management, turning challenges into opportunities through community involvement.

The Hibiscus Festival goes beyond entertainment; it provides a platform to address social issues. This year, contestants have visited the Golden Age Home, where they encountered poignant stories of abandonment and neglect among the elderly. The experience deeply moved Miss APCO Coatings, Gitali Ganisha Ram, and Miss I Tech Pacific, Salanieta Galo, who call for more care and dignity for the elderly, particularly women.

The festival also serves as a backdrop for broader dialogues about community welfare, safety, and environmental issues. The permanent placement of security measures and cleanliness initiatives marks a forward-thinking approach to Suva’s future. The event serves as a meaningful reminder of the collective responsibility to care for the elderly, ensuring they are not left behind.

As the Hibiscus Festival continues to be a beacon of culture, unity, and empowerment, it underscores the vibrant community spirit and dedication to positive social change. It remains a pivotal celebration that not only entertains but also inspires, educates, and unites the community towards common goals.
