A young humpback whale, measuring 8 meters, was rescued after becoming entangled in commercial fishing gear off the coast of Queensland, near North Stradbroke Island. The Sea World Foundation rescue team quickly responded to a distress call from ferry operators who spotted the whale caught in ropes, lines, and buoys.

The team traveled two hours from the Gold Coast to join Queensland National Parks & Wildlife rangers near Dunwich, where they faced challenging conditions, including strong winds and choppy waters. While disentangling whales is common during migration season, this case was particularly complex due to the whale’s unusual location and the conditions at sea.

Wayne Phillips, Head of Marine Sciences at the Sea World Foundation, emphasized that the rescue was not routine because they were uncertain where the whale usually resides. After locating the whale, the team was able to use a long rope to maneuver closer and assess the situation.

Initially, the whale appeared lethargic but was otherwise in good health. The rescue team found that the gear was primarily wrapped around the whale’s tail fluke, which made the disentanglement process more straightforward. With specialized equipment, the crew efficiently cut the ropes in just 20 minutes.

Phillips expressed the team’s relief and elation when they finally cut the last rope, allowing the whale to swim freely into the open waters. He commended the team for their calm under pressure during the operation.

As the annual humpback migration takes place, the Sea World Foundation’s rescue team remains vigilant, anticipating further rescues as more whales pass along Australia’s east coast. Anyone who notices a marine animal in distress is encouraged to alert the authorities.

This successful rescue showcases the commitment and skill of marine rescue teams, highlighting the importance of swift action to protect marine wildlife. It also serves as a reminder of the impact of human activities on ocean creatures, urging vigilance from the public to help safeguard marine life.
