Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert exited the team’s 20-10 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday after seemingly aggravating the high-ankle sprain that had kept him out of practice earlier in the week.
Herbert did not return for the fourth quarter as the Chargers (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season, while Pittsburgh (3-0) maintained its undefeated streak behind quarterback Justin Fields.
In the game, Herbert completed 12 of 18 passes for 125 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown throw to Quentin Johnson that marked the game’s opening score. Unfortunately for the Chargers, that was the high point of their offense; they managed just a field goal late in the first half and failed to score again. The rushing attack also struggled, totaling only 61 yards on 20 carries.
Herbert was seen limping off the field midway through the third quarter after being sacked for the second time, seemingly reinjuring his right ankle, which he initially hurt in a Week 2 victory against the Carolina Panthers.
He left the stadium wearing a walking boot.
Following the game, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh informed reporters that the team had made pre-game plans to substitute Herbert if he exhibited any signs of limping.
