Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert exited the field during the team’s 20-10 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers after re-aggravating a high-ankle sprain that had previously affected his practice schedule.
Herbert was unable to finish the game, missing the entire fourth quarter as the Chargers dropped to a 2-1 record, while Pittsburgh improved to 3-0 with Justin Fields at the helm.
In his outing, Herbert completed 12 of 18 passes for 125 yards, throwing a 27-yard touchdown to Quentin Johnson for the first score of the game. Unfortunately for the Chargers, that marked the peak of their offensive performance; they only managed a field goal before halftime and were shut out in the second half. The rushing attack contributed little, with just 61 yards on 20 carries.
Herbert limped off the field midway through the third quarter after being sacked, appearing to re-injure the right ankle he initially hurt in a Week 2 victory over the Carolina Panthers, when he was tripped up during a play. He was seen leaving the stadium in a walking boot.
Following the game, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh informed reporters that the team had a plan in place to remove Herbert from play if he exhibited any signs of limping.
