Henry Winkler, beloved for his role in Happy Days, is set to release a new children’s book titled Detective Duck: The Mystery at Emerald Pond on September 30, marking a significant milestone as his 40th publication aimed at young readers. The story introduces a spirited and environmentally-conscious duck who navigates themes of friendship, competition, and the dangers of plastic pollution.
Winkler, who has openly discussed his struggles with dyslexia—diagnosed in his 30s—has always aimed to help children connect with reading from an early age, ensuring they do not face the same challenges he did. His partnership with children’s book author Lin Oliver began with the creation of Hank Zipzer: The World’s Greatest Underachiever in 2004, a series that has grown to encompass 17 books. Winkler credits Oliver’s collaboration as pivotal, noting their shared experience in the television industry enhances their creative process.
The inspiration for Detective Duck struck during the COVID-19 pandemic while Winkler and his wife, Stacey, were working on a jigsaw puzzle. Lin Oliver called with the idea of a character named Detective Duck, linking it to Hank Zipzer’s library adventure. This led to the birth of a vibrant tale featuring a charming duck, embodying values of environmental stewardship and humor, which Winkler notes adds an engaging element for both children and adults.
Winkler’s genuine passion for children’s literature stems from his desire to foster a strong sense of self in children. He reflects, “If I was not an actor, I would work with children. Make sure that their sense of self was straight and strong.” His affinity for storytelling resonates in readers, many of whom see themselves reflected in his characters.
Central to the new book, Detective Duck: The Mystery at Emerald Pond, is a vibrant narrative that explores themes of community and fun. As excitement builds around the Emerald Pond Spring Games, young readers are introduced to Willow Feathers McBeaver and her best friend Sal the salamander, weaving a delightful story filled with adventure and camaraderie. The illustrated work, brought to life by Dan Santat, promises to intrigue young minds while promoting reading as a joyful experience.
Winkler’s unwavering commitment to enriching young minds through literature showcases his belief in the transformative power of reading. He wishes for children to experience the liberation he found later in life, emphasizing, “What you’re giving your child…is liberation.”
Detective Duck: The Mystery at Emerald Pond will be available at various retailers, and Winkler’s journey reflects a hopeful message: that literature can be a source of inspiration and empowerment for future generations.
