Heisman Winner Travis Hunter: A Star on the Field and in the Classroom

Travis Hunter’s remarkable achievements on the football field have been matched by his academic success at the University of Colorado Boulder. A junior from Suwanee, Georgia, Hunter is an anthropology major who has maintained an impressive 3.798 cumulative GPA. His academic excellence shone brightly in the fall of 2023, where he achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, and he continued that success into the spring 2024 semester with a GPA of 3.908, earning him a place on the first-team All-Academic Team.

Last year, he made history as only the second player in CU’s history to receive both first-team All-American and first-team Academic All-American honors, a distinction he shares with Joe Romig. On Saturday, Hunter further solidified his legacy by becoming the second CU Buffalo to win the Heisman Trophy, recognizing him as the top player in college football. Notably, this makes him the first Academic All-American to win the Heisman since Florida quarterback Tim Tebow in 2007.

CU Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz praised Hunter’s outstanding performances, stating, “Travis Hunter has been the epitome of excellence all season.” He emphasized that Hunter’s achievements on the field are matched by his commitment to academics, highlighting the joy he brings to both football and his studies.

LaTonya Watson, associate director of academics at the Herbst Academic Center and Hunter’s academic advisor, noted that his champion mindset extends beyond football, propelling him to set high academic goals. The support from the Herbst Academic Center is evident in Hunter’s accomplishments, reflecting the pride felt by the staff in both his academic and athletic pursuits.

Hunter’s scholarly achievements shine a light on the broader success of CU student-athletes, who also recorded the highest semester GPA in school history last semester at 3.182, raising the cumulative GPA to an all-time high of 3.244. CU Boulder also celebrated a record number of conference academic awards, with 178 honors last year.

The future is bright for CU student-athletes, and Hunter’s recent Heisman Trophy win will soon be displayed alongside past accolades in Legacy Hall, located in the UCHealth Champions Center. His journey as a student and athlete not only sets a high standard at CU but will also inspire future generations of students to excel in both their academic and extracurricular endeavors.
