Significant rainfall has swept across various regions of the country in the past 24 hours, resulting in elevated river levels and increased flood risks in vulnerable areas.
The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported impressive rainfall totals from 4 PM yesterday to 4 PM today, with Rarawai recording the highest at 235.0mm. Following closely were Nadarivatu with 197.5mm, Navala at 192.5mm, and Nanoko at 159.5mm. Other areas also saw substantial rainfall, including Waikubukubu with 132.5mm, Monasavu at 117.5mm, and Lautoka with 104.5mm.
A flood warning has been issued for low-lying and flood-prone regions adjacent to and downstream of the Nakauvadra River in Rakiraki Town, as well as areas like Naseyani along the Yaqara River, the Tavua River, and within the floodplains of the Ba River. Additionally, a flood alert is in effect for vulnerable areas near the Nadi, Nawaka, and Tuva Rivers in Nadroga.
Local authorities are urging residents in affected and surrounding communities to remain vigilant. They advise against traveling on flooded roads and river crossings and emphasize the importance of adhering to all official weather warnings and advisories as the unpredictable weather conditions are anticipated to persist.
