As temperatures rise in New York this week, the National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a heat advisory affecting much of western and central New York for Thursday, July 24. The advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The counties impacted include several from western New York, such as Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Oswego, Genesee, Livingston, and Ontario. Additionally, central New York and Southern Tier counties including Broome, Chemung, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, southern Cayuga, Tioga, Tompkins, and Yates are also under advisories.

Residents can expect heat index values in the mid- to upper-90s. The actual forecasted highs are expected to reach the mid-90s in areas like Rochester and Syracuse, with parts of the Southern Tier, including Ithaca and Elmira, possibly seeing temperatures in the low 90s.

Due to high heat and humidity, there is an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

To stay safe during this heat wave, individuals are advised to stay hydrated and utilize air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. It’s wise to avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day, opting for early mornings or evenings instead. Lightweight and loose-fitting clothing is recommended, and it’s crucial to never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as interior temperatures can escalate perilously within minutes.

Recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is essential, and medical attention should be sought immediately if symptoms arise. For those working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises taking frequent breaks in shaded or cooler areas to prevent heat-related illnesses.

This advisory underscores the importance of being prepared and aware during the warmest days, ensuring safety for all, particularly those most at risk.
