Director Michael Mann has hinted that the long-awaited sequel to his acclaimed crime film “Heat” might begin production in 2026. Mann shared these insights while attending the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. He mentioned that the team is actively working on essential pre-production tasks such as budgeting, scheduling, and casting for “Heat 2.”

Recent reports have suggested that the high budget Mann is requesting for the sequel has been a point of discussion with Warner Bros. Mann indicated efforts to reduce this budget. There is buzzing interest from major actors, including Leonardo DiCaprio, who is reportedly considering a significant role. Earlier talks mentioned Adam Driver and Austin Butler as potential cast members.

During a masterclass event at the festival, when the original 1995 film was referred to as an “Al Pacino film,” Mann clarified that it was a collective effort featuring performances from Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, and Mykelti Williamson. This ensemble approach is expected to be a focal point in the sequel as well, which will function both as a prequel and a sequel that stretches over decades, with a variety of international locations.

Michael Mann, in collaboration with “Heat 2” author Meg Gardiner, is co-writing the script, which may see some deviations from the original novel. With interest from a range of high-profile actors, Mann appears to be positioning the film as a true ensemble piece, continuing the legacy of its predecessor. Fans eagerly await more official announcements regarding casting and production timelines for “Heat 2.”
