Hazy Days Ahead: What to Expect from Wildfire Smoke and Upcoming Rain

Today, residents are experiencing hazy conditions due to wildfire smoke, particularly in northern regions such as Maine, where an air quality alert has been issued. The smoke is expected to be thickest in these areas throughout the day, with the haze also affecting eastern Massachusetts and extending toward Cape Cod.

Locally, today’s temperatures are significantly cooler compared to the mid-90s recorded yesterday, with coastal areas expected to peak in the 70s thanks to an eastward sea breeze. Inland areas may see temperatures rise to the mid-80s this afternoon, with some cloud cover moving in tonight, but remaining rain-free for the day.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain is back on the forecast, particularly late in the morning into the afternoon. Widespread showers are expected, potentially accompanied by some rumbles of thunder as the system moves through. While western Massachusetts and Connecticut may see heavier rainfall that raises flooding concerns, local forecasts indicate around half an inch of rain, which should avoid flooding issues.

As the rain system clears out late Sunday night, humidity levels are expected to rise, leading into a hot start to the workweek as temperatures approach 90 degrees.

Despite the haze and impending rain, the forecast promises relief and a return to summer warmth next week, allowing outdoor activities to resume as conditions improve.
