PARIS – Chari Hawkins, a former track star from Utah State, faced disappointment in the high jump segment of the heptathlon at her Olympic debut. Despite her remarkable collegiate achievements from 2011 to 2015, she finished with no points after failing to clear the height on all three attempts.
Hawkins, who is 33 years old, became the first Olympian from Utah State since James Parker in 2004. Typically known for her strength in jumping events, she has recently improved her performance in the throwing disciplines, which helped her reach Olympic competition.
During the high jump, the initial bar height was set at 1.56 meters and was raised by 3 centimeters for each successful jump. Hawkins cleared the first five heights effortlessly, but during her sixth attempt at 1.71 meters, she clipped the bar. After two more attempts at the same height, she was unable to secure a clearance, resulting in a no mark since she exhausted all her chances at that height.
This outcome was a letdown for Hawkins, who previously cleared 1.76 meters and secured fourth place at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships earlier in the year.
The heptathlon is a comprehensive track and field event consisting of seven disciplines over two days. Athletes earn points across various events, with the highest total score determining the winner. The events include the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin, and 800m.
The 2024 Paris Olympics are scheduled from July 26 to August 11, featuring 329 events spanning 19 days and showcasing over 10,000 athletes.
