ATHENS, Ohio – John Hauser has been elevated to associate head coach while continuing his role as defensive coordinator, as announced by Head Coach Brian Smith on Friday, December 20.
Coach Smith highlighted Hauser’s significant contributions, stating, “John is an excellent coach and this promotion reflects the positive impact he makes on our program. Year after year he has taken our defense to the next level, and he genuinely cares for our student-athletes. I am grateful to have him on our staff and name him associate head coach.”
Hauser joined Ohio in 2022 after an eight-year tenure as co-defensive coordinator at Miami (Ohio). He became defensive passing game coordinator in 2023 and took over as defensive coordinator at the start of the 2024 season.
Under Hauser’s leadership in the 2024 regular season, Ohio dominated the Mid-American Conference in rushing defense, ranking fifth nationally by allowing just 94.3 yards per game. The Bobcats allowed only 17.46 points per game, placing 11th in the nation and leading the MAC. Overall, they ranked eighth nationally in total defense, permitting an average of 295.2 yards per game.
In a testament to Hauser’s coaching prowess, Ohio’s defense stifled Miami in the 2024 MAC Championship, surrendering just three points in a commanding 38-3 victory. This marked the first occasion a team had been held scoreless in terms of touchdowns during a MAC Championship game.
The 2023 season also showcased strong defensive performances, with Ohio ranking fourth in the nation for total defense. The team notably restricted Power 5 opponent Iowa State to just seven points and limited Western Michigan to their lowest rushing output of the season at 79 yards. Additionally, they set a program record by forcing five turnovers in the 2023 Myrtle Beach Bowl, where they triumphed 41-21 against Georgia Southern.
Before joining Ohio, Hauser nurtured talent at Miami, coaching Quinten Rollins, who led the RedHawks with seven interceptions and earned MAC Defensive Player of the Year honors before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the second round.
Hauser’s coaching journey also included coaching safeties at The Citadel, as well as stints at Wayne State, Northern Illinois, and Wittenberg. As a student-athlete at Wittenberg, he earned three all-conference selections and was named a Division III All-American in 2002.
Outside of football, Hauser enjoys a family life with his wife Seanna and their four children: McKenna, John Jr. (“JJ”), and twins Jackson and Maria.
John Hauser’s promotion not only recognizes his coaching acumen but also highlights the potential for continued success at Ohio. His experience and commitment to student-athletes pave the way for a promising future for the program.
