ConcernedApe, the creator of the beloved indie hit Stardew Valley, has shared intriguing new updates regarding his upcoming title Haunted Chocolatier. While a specific release date remains unannounced, fans are excited as several key details about the game have been clarified since its initial reveal.
Haunted Chocolatier was first announced on October 21, 2021, following considerable anticipation for Barone’s next endeavor after the success of Stardew Valley in 2016. Development on this new project started around 2020, with Barone emphasizing the challenges of being a solo developer, which has contributed to the game’s gradual progress. In his early communications, he expressed, “I haven’t even gotten to the good stuff yet. I’ve been mostly working on the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the game so far.”
In August 2024, Barone revealed that development on Haunted Chocolatier had been temporarily halted as he shifted his focus to finalizing the long-awaited version 1.6 update for Stardew Valley on console and mobile platforms. This reflects Barone’s commitment to ensuring quality and polish across his titles.
In an update shared in early 2026, he made it clear that Haunted Chocolatier would only release once it meets his high standards: “The bottom line is, I don’t want to give a release date. The game will come out when it’s done.” This transparency has been appreciated by fans, demonstrating Barone’s dedication to quality over timeliness.
As per the game’s official FAQ, Haunted Chocolatier is currently in development for PC, with plans to expand to other major platforms in the future. The game immerses players in the role of a chocolatier operating a confectionery shop set within a haunted castle. Players will gather ingredients, create chocolates, and sell their treats while interacting with unique townsfolk. Although it shares the “town game” ethos with Stardew Valley, Barone notes that Haunted Chocolatier presents a distinctly different experience.
Unlike its predecessor, the new title incorporates action RPG elements, featuring combat against various adversaries, including slimes and crows, along with significant boss battles. Players will have the ability to draw villagers into the castle and engage in meaningful one-on-one conversations that include dialogue choices.
Fishing minigames, a fan-favorite from Stardew Valley, are set to return in Haunted Chocolatier. In a blog post from August 2025, Barone confirmed that features familiar to players would be included, with a January 2026 entry revealing content related to fishing and an NPC available to assist players with bait and tackle.
Screenshots released since 2023 offer tantalizing glimpses into the game’s captivating environments and characters, but Barone has opted for a cautious approach in sharing detailed information until development progresses further. This blend of anticipation and innovation keeps the community engaged and optimistic about the game’s future. As players eagerly await Haunted Chocolatier’s release, they can look forward to a rich, new gaming experience crafted by a developer passionate about his work.
