Kannon K. Shanmugam, a distinguished appellate attorney known for his connections within the Republican Party, is set to join the Harvard Corporation on July 1, according to a recent announcement from the University. His election was confirmed by both the Corporation and the Board of Overseers, succeeding Theodore V. Wells Jr., who held a seat for over 12 years.
Shanmugam’s impressive legal career includes arguments in 39 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and over 150 cases in various courts nationwide. Currently a partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, he previously served in the Office of the Solicitor General during the George W. Bush administration. His appointment comes at a pivotal time for Harvard, as the institution is involved in two lawsuits against the Trump administration that may escalate to the Supreme Court.
Shanmugam is noted for his engagement with the Federalist Society, a conservative legal organization, and he clerked for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, a key figure in the conservative judicial philosophy. Harvard President Alan M. Garber and Corporation Senior Fellow Penny S. Pritzker expressed enthusiasm about Shanmugam joining the Corporation, citing his potential to bring “fresh perspectives and valuable insights.” They also extended gratitude to Wells for his significant contributions.
Having graduated from Harvard College with a degree in classics and later from Harvard Law School, Shanmugam credits Harvard for providing him with crucial opportunities and exposure to diverse ideas.
