Hogwarts is back in session as HBO’s long-anticipated “Harry Potter” TV series has officially commenced production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. This marks a significant moment nearly 14 years after “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” brought Harry’s cinematic journey to a conclusion.
The series has unveiled its first look at Dominic McLaughlin, who portrays Harry Potter, donning the iconic round glasses and Hogwarts uniform. He is joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, all of whom were chosen from an impressive pool of over 30,000 auditioning actors.
Casting announcements continue to roll in, confirming Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander. The series is set to premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max, where available.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, both known for their work on “Succession,” will take viewers through young Harry’s journey as he learns about his wizarding capabilities, leaves his mundane life, and enters the enchanting world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Along this journey, he will forge lasting friendships with Ron and Hermione while facing the formidable Lord Voldemort.
The cast is further enriched by veteran actors such as John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Additionally, Katherine Parkinson will portray Molly Weasley, while Lox Pratt takes on the role of Draco Malfoy.
Each of the seven books will be adapted into a corresponding season, beginning with shooting for Season 1, anticipated to continue into the spring of 2026. Following this, Season 2 will begin production shortly after.
The new series promises a rich production quality, with a dedicated team including costume designer Holly Waddington and heads for various departments such as cinematography, hair and makeup, and visual effects, among others. Produced by HBO in collaboration with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television, this adaptation also sees J.K. Rowling and other esteemed producers onboard at the helm.
With such a passionate team behind the project, the series aims to bring the beloved wizarding world to life once again, offering both long-time fans and new viewers a magical experience that honors the source material. The anticipation for this series builds as it embarks on a journey to reintroduce the iconic characters and adventures that captivated a generation and beyond.
