Vice President Kamala Harris provided a detailed explanation on Thursday about her evolving views on fracking and immigration during an exclusive interview with CNN’s Dana Bash. Harris asserted that her core values remain unchanged, but her experience as vice president has enhanced her perspective on significant national issues.
In this first joint interview with her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, since being nominated for the Democratic presidential ticket, Harris revealed her intention to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet if elected. She recounted the moment President Joe Biden informed her of his decision to end his reelection campaign after a poor debate performance, though she did not commit to changing Biden’s policy on arms sales to Israel.
Addressing criticisms from her opponents regarding her racial identity, Harris dismissed Donald Trump’s remark that she “happened to turn Black,” calling it an outdated tactic.
Harris outlined her priorities if she takes office, particularly emphasizing the importance of supporting and strengthening the middle class, without detailing specific steps. In the wake of increasing scrutiny over her previous policy positions, she acknowledged her shifts on fracking and border policies, explaining that while her stance has evolved, her underlying values have not changed.
In her prior remarks, Harris had firmly supported a fracking ban. However, she shifted her position, highlighting that a transition to a thriving clean energy economy does not necessitate a ban on fracking. She pointed to record investments in climate change mitigation made by the Biden administration as part of her environmental achievements.
As for immigration, Harris recalled her record as California’s attorney general and her commitment to building consensus around immigration reform.
During the interview, Walsh expressed enthusiasm for their partnership and addressed accusations regarding the accuracy of his past statements while maintaining focus on challenges posed by Republican critiques directed toward his family.
With concerns over the economy still looming for Democrats, Harris laid out a plan that targets lowering costs on essential needs like food and housing, primarily through actions against corporate practices. While she argued for the administration’s prior actions, she stressed that more work is necessary.
On matters concerning the Middle East, Harris aligned with Biden’s policies and highlighted the urgency of reaching a resolution to the ongoing conflict, particularly regarding the release of hostages.
In sharing the moment she learned of Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris reflected on her initial reactions and her commitment to inclusivity in decision-making, including appointing a member of the opposite party to her Cabinet. She acknowledged the milestone her candidacy represents, emphasizing her capability to lead for all Americans, regardless of race or gender.
